The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Dolphins watched Jordan James slide 101 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
If Mellott pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 15 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Taking Tate Ratledge in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Malachi Moore in No. 98 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Nothing to complain about; Tez Johnson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Earnest Greene III in the 116th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board fumbled Deontae Lawson all the way to pick 152, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jordan James in the 154th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The roster fit checks out.
A tight end of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 10 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Xavier Nwankpa here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A big swing on Tommy Mellott at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
