Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Dolphins spent the 96th overall pick on Jaheim Bell, a name the board had a full 44 spots lower. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. That Cooper pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with edge rusher still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid up for Troy Fautanu at the 19th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
In pick No. 21 they get a ballhawk on the outside. More want than need.
The board had Xavier Legette higher than No. 48, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They let Tyler Guyton come to them and pounced at Round 2, Pick 21. The roster fit checks out.
Edgerrin Cooper at the 79th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaheim Bell this early at slot 96. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Frank Gore Jr. in the 186th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
JD Bertrand in the 199th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Taulia Tagovailoa at slot 242. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
