Some picks age like wine; Xavier Thomas at pick No. 239 will need to, sitting 39 spots clear of his grade. Put together, it is a D-.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 9 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
In slot 25 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at Round 2, Pick 21 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Cooper Beebe in pick 75; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No drama and no debate, Zak Zinter went about where he belonged in the 88th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Mohamed Kamara at par in pick No. 111, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good price on Ainias Smith in pick No. 123, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid up for Austin Booker at slot 155 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Joe Milton III in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Javon Baker at pick 186 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for AJ Barner in Round 6, Pick 24, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Xavier Thomas at the 239th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
