There is reaching, and then there is Rivaldo Fairweather at the 228th overall pick. The Dolphins jumped the board by 212 and dared it to prove them wrong. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Ivey at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want.
The veteran additions, Kaden Elliss chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a blindside protector, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Dylan Fairchild in pick 55, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, Sebastian Castro at the 86th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jared Ivey in No. 99. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Antwane Wells Jr. at the Round 4 slot, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jared Wilson at Round 5, Pick 13 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Bhayshul Tuten at the Round 5 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached into another round for Denver Harris, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A real head-scratcher, Aidan Keanaaina in the 227th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Rivaldo Fairweather well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
KJ Jefferson at pick 251 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
