There is reaching, and then there is Rara Dillworth at Round 7, Pick 41. The Dolphins jumped the board by 222 and dared it to prove them wrong.
They have staked the next five years on Cam Ward, which is the only story that really matters here. That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a franchise quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Aireontae Ersery in the 47th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
The board had cheaper options than Tez Johnson at the 98th pick, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached into another round for Kyren Lacy, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A big swing on Cobee Bryant at pick 114, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Taking Jack Bech in pick No. 148 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Smael Mondon Jr. at pick No. 157 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Circle this one: Addison West at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value said wait; Arian Smith in the 231st pick says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Will Sheppard at No. 233 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Maliq Carr at the 249th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They talked themselves into Fred Davis at slot 251, and the board did not agree. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Joey Slackman in Round 7, Pick 40, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Rara Dillworth at pick 255 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
