A masterclass at the trade table lands the Patriots a A.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Dayon Hayes at Round 7, Pick 4 is 70 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Little to argue with here, and the A says so.

Mafah at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

Bottom line, they left the weekend a clearly better team, and they earned every bit of it.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.6 · Pick 38 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 20
Circle this one: Nick Emmanwori at the 38th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Colston Loveland · TE · rank 23
Colston Loveland at No. 49 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.25 · Pick 89 · Darien Porter · CB · rank 78
A slide stopped in the 89th pick, with Darien Porter worth more than the price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.6 · Pick 145 · Darius Alexander · DT · rank 129
Darius Alexander slid further than he should have, and pick 145 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.15 · Pick 154 · Jeffrey Bassa · LB · rank 130
You do not let a linebacker like Jeffrey Bassa reach slot 154 and blink. They did not. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R7.1 · Pick 219 · Phil Mafah · RB · rank 165
Steal is underselling it; Phil Mafah at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.4 · Pick 222 · Dayon Hayes · DE-EDGE · rank 292
Dayon Hayes at pick No. 222 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.22 · Pick 240 · Craig Woodson · S · rank 204
They barely believed it either: Craig Woodson still on the board at the 240th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.23 · Pick 241 · Trevor Etienne · RB · rank 216
Trevor Etienne at pick 241 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
