It is the swing that defines the weekend: Barryn Sorrell in No. 176, a good 152 spots before the room expected him. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Pierce falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 27 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Fair-plus on Jihaad Campbell, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good price on Jonah Savaiinaea in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Xavier Watts is a better player than No. 59 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Somehow Dylan Sampson was still sitting there in slot 85, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had Ozzy Trapilo higher than the 100th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Ajani Cornelius slipping to Round 4, Pick 25 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Tyler Shough in the 150th pick, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
