After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Cowboys committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Milton III falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The cost of the Gore Jr. reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Kamari Lassiter at Round 2, Pick 24 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Dominick Puni at par in slot 87, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid up for Christian Mahogany at No. 89 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Marist Liufau is a better player than the 174th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick 216 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Joe Milton III still on the board at pick No. 233. A need, and now a little less of one.
Tayvion Robinson at the 244th overall pick is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
