The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Bears watched Malachi Fields slide 36 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
They are betting Randall proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They will regret leaving linebacker for another day if the season turns on it.
The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Gabe Jacas at the 57th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Dillon Thieneman at slot 60 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Somehow Chase Bisontis was still sitting there in No. 89, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Malachi Fields in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nothing to complain about; Gracen Halton went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A cornerback of that caliber at pick No. 239 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Fa'alili Fa'amoe in the 241st overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Adam Randall at Round 7, Pick 40 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
