New England Patriots

The Patriots worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

The Patriots did not so much draft Hayden Conner as overpay for him, 50 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Golden at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The Caelen Carson deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 10
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Matthew Golden · WR · rank 14
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Matthew Golden in the Round 2 slot, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 31
Omarion Hampton in pick 57 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Alfred Collins · DT · rank 56
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Alfred Collins. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jared Ivey · DE-EDGE · rank 79
They paid up for Jared Ivey at No. 69 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.10 · Pick 74 · Harold Fannin Jr. · TE · rank 53
Harold Fannin Jr. at the 74th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Charles Grant · OT · rank 91
They went early on Charles Grant in slot 76, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
R3.30 · Pick 94 · Zy Alexander · CB · rank 98
They paid sticker price for Zy Alexander in Round 3, Pick 30, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.2 · Pick 104 · Xavier Restrepo · WR · rank 106
No drama and no debate, Xavier Restrepo went about where he belonged in pick 104. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.4 · Pick 106 · Anthony Belton · OT · rank 112
By-the-book stuff, Anthony Belton at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.12 · Pick 114 · Will Howard · QB · rank 101
Will Howard in the 114th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.6 · Pick 144 · Cody Simon · LB · rank 131
A slide stopped in the 144th overall pick, with Cody Simon worth more than the price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.17 · Pick 193 · Jaylen Reed · S · rank 188
Jaylen Reed in pick No. 193 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.40 · Pick 216 · Isaac TeSlaa · WR · rank 233
Isaac TeSlaa at No. 216 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Hayden Conner · OG · rank 267
Value said wait; Hayden Conner in No. 217 says they were not listening. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
