The Patriots clearly saw something nobody else did in Kimani Vidal, taking him 22 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Nix value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 7 they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
Good price on Brian Thomas Jr. in No. 34, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 2 slot, where Bo Nix graded well above the range. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, Cade Stover at slot 68 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid up for Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at the 103rd overall pick when waiting would have done the job. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Roger Rosengarten at Round 5, Pick 1 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tanor Bortolini at the 180th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nothing to complain about; Cornelius Johnson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value said wait; Kimani Vidal in the 231st overall pick says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
