Call it larceny. Eli Stowers sat on the board until the Round 4 slot, and the Steelers did not need to be asked twice.
The Kelly pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 21 they get a ballhawk on the back end at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Circle this one: Emmanuel Pregnon at the Round 2 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They will replay Anthony Hill Jr. at No. 76 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
D'Angelo Ponds at pick No. 85 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Skyler Bell slid further than he should have, and Round 3, Pick 31 is lovely value for the wide receiver. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled Domonique Orange all the way to the 99th pick, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They barely believed it either: Eli Stowers still on the board at the 121st overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A big swing on Drew Allar at slot 135, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A slide stopped in slot 161, with Dametrious Crownover worth more than the price. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Steal is underselling it; Kevin Coleman Jr. at the 216th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A quarterback of that caliber at No. 224 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jeremiah Wright in pick No. 230 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Jack Kelly in the 237th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
