Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Barrett Carter, the No. 83 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 172. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
Rogers has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Tank Dell pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Jalon Walker at Round 2, Pick 21 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Malaki Starks in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
You do not let a running back like Omarion Hampton reach No. 76 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Alfred Collins at slot 84 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Jaylin Noel in the 137th pick, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steal is underselling it; Devin Neal at the 170th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board fumbled Barrett Carter all the way to pick No. 172, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Willie Lampkin at pick 174 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They will replay Jared Wilson at Round 6, Pick 12 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on CJ West. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They talked themselves into Eric Gregory at pick 243, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
A big swing on Caleb Rogers at No. 249, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
