The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Tahj Brooks, the No. 127 name on the board, sitting there at Round 6, Pick 12 like a gift left on the doorstep.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

Bottom line, they left the weekend a clearly better team, and they earned every bit of it.
