Call it larceny. Ollie Gordon II sat on the board until pick 227, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice. Little to argue with here, and the A says so.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Bottom line, with Marcus Mbow leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
R3.12
· Pick 76
· Marcus Mbow
· OT
· rank 51
The board fumbled Marcus Mbow all the way to pick No. 76, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.17
· Pick 81
· Omarr Norman-Lott
· DT
· rank 74
Nothing to complain about; Omarr Norman-Lott went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.32
· Pick 133
· Cam Skattebo
· RB
· rank 105
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at pick 133 is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
R5.11
· Pick 150
· Jordan Phillips
· DT
· rank 112
Taking Jordan Phillips in Round 5, Pick 11 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.33
· Pick 172
· Jay Higgins
· LB
· rank 137
Jay Higgins in No. 172 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.35
· Pick 174
· Nick Nash
· WR
· rank 155
Nick Nash at the 174th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.12
· Pick 190
· Ja'Quinden Jackson
· RB
· rank 166
Somehow Ja'Quinden Jackson was still sitting there in slot 190, and they pounced on premier running back value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.33
· Pick 211
· JJ Pegues
· DT
· rank 187
JJ Pegues at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.9
· Pick 227
· Ollie Gordon II
· RB
· rank 175
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ollie Gordon II in pick 227, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.31
· Pick 249
· DJ Campbell
· OG
· rank 244
A tidy little value on DJ Campbell in No. 249, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
