Of all the ways to open, the Packers chose the head-scratcher, spending the Round 2 slot on Javon Bullard with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still wide open. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Allen falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Tyler Nubin · S · rank 29
In slot 25 they get a two-high chess piece. Need was not the driver here.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
A premium they did not need to pay, Jackson Powers-Johnson a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 63
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Bullard adds a safety and leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots untouched.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 92
No drama and no debate, Bucky Irving went about where he belonged in No. 88. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Caelen Carson · CB · rank 85
A clean, defensible pick in slot 91 with a little surplus value in Caelen Carson. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 136
Cedric Gray in pick No. 127 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 159
Braelon Allen is a better player than the 168th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.29 · Pick 204 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 213
A reach for Jordan Magee in the Round 6 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Erick All · TE · rank 230
Erick All in the 216th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Trey Taylor · S · rank 255
A conviction pick on Trey Taylor at pick No. 243 that the board grades a round light. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · Jeremy Flax · OT · rank 254
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jeremy Flax. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
