The Texans torched the value chart for Jalen Catalon, taking him 35 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
The Melton pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and quarterback. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.29
· Pick 29
· Keon Coleman
· WR
· rank 34
No drama and no debate, Keon Coleman went about where he belonged in slot 29. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.15
· Pick 47
· Mekhi Wingo
· DT
· rank 61
Mekhi Wingo in No. 47 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.20
· Pick 84
· Max Melton
· DB
· rank 95
A surprising call. With edge rusher and quarterback still to address, they spent pick 84 on Max Melton, a defensive back they were not short of.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Raheim Sanders
· RB
· rank 120
Raheim Sanders in the Round 3 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.32
· Pick 95
· Junior Colson
· LB
· rank 109
They liked Junior Colson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 95. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.15
· Pick 115
· Christian Haynes
· OG
· rank 123
A premium they did not need to pay, Christian Haynes a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.23
· Pick 123
· Cade Stover
· TE-EDGE
· rank 130
A curious use of pick No. 123. Edge rusher and quarterback needed the pick; a TE-EDGE in Cade Stover did not.
R5.16
· Pick 152
· Jaylan Ford
· LB
· rank 176
Jaylan Ford at the 152nd pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.30
· Pick 166
· Jalen Catalon
· DB
· rank 201
They talked themselves into Jalen Catalon at pick 166, and the board did not agree. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
R6.27
· Pick 202
· Tre Harris
· WR
· rank 183
They barely believed it either: Tre Harris still on the board at Round 6, Pick 27. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.20
· Pick 240
· Austin Stogner
· TE
· rank 252
They went early on Austin Stogner in slot 240, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
R7.34
· Pick 254
· LaDarius Henderson
· OT
· rank 231
LaDarius Henderson in the 254th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
