Call it larceny. Cam Skattebo sat on the board until pick 224, and the Dolphins did not need to be asked twice. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. Job largely done: interior defensive lineman settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a two-high chess piece at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Circle this one: Jalon Walker at the 49th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Omarr Norman-Lott at No. 98 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 114 on Xavier Watts with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots unsolved.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Barrett Carter in pick No. 117, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Chris Paul Jr. was still sitting there in the Round 4 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Dylan Fairchild here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board fumbled TreVeyon Henderson all the way to the 150th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Jake Majors in pick No. 152 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Carson Schwesinger at the 154th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Cam Skattebo in Round 7, Pick 8 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A specialist of that caliber at slot 231 is the definition of value, full stop. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
You do not let a safety like Upton Stout reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They barely believed it either: DJ Campbell still on the board at No. 252. A need, and now a little less of one.
