Arizona Cardinals

Best value of the weekend goes to the Cardinals for Keegan: B.

The Cardinals did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Trevor Keegan fell into slot 186. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback and linebacker open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They will need McCaffrey to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Marvin Harrison Jr. · WR · rank 1
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · Nate Wiggins · CB · rank 20
In the 27th pick they get a lockdown presence outside. More want than need.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Jer'Zhan Newton · DL · rank 13
Jer'Zhan Newton in pick 35 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 47
Cooper Beebe at slot 66 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Brandon Dorlus · DE-EDGE · rank 79
Brandon Dorlus at Round 3, Pick 7 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · DJ James · CB · rank 53
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, DJ James adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback and linebacker untouched.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 105
No edge and no loss on Zak Zinter in the 104th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 148
They went early on Luke McCaffrey in No. 138, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.26 · Pick 162 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 171
A reach for AJ Barner in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
R6.11 · Pick 186 · Trevor Keegan · OG · rank 144
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Trevor Keegan in No. 186, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.6 · Pick 226 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 228
By-the-book stuff, Frank Gore Jr. at the 226th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
