The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: TreVeyon Henderson, the No. 61 name on the board, in No. 128.
Trapilo has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Nick Emmanwori and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a two-high chess piece at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They read the board right and Kenneth Grant was the payoff at slot 38. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Omarion Hampton still on the board at No. 52. The roster fit checks out.
Ozzy Trapilo at pick 65 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A wild overpay on Jack Nelson in the 71st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Kevin Winston Jr. at pick No. 105 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They will replay Deontae Lawson at the 124th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Oronde Gadsden II. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
You do not let a running back like TreVeyon Henderson reach pick 128 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They talked themselves into Thor Griffith at slot 220, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Seth McLaughlin in the 241st overall pick, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
