Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. TreVeyon Henderson, the No. 61 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 5, Pick 6.
They are betting Horn Jr. proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Nice patience on Nick Emmanwori, who had no business lasting to the 33rd overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Omarion Hampton was still sitting there in No. 49, and they pounced on premier running back value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
You do not let a linebacker like Jihaad Campbell reach slot 69 and blink. They did not. A minor itch, scratched.
Jack Nelson at the 77th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 79 with a little surplus value in Omarr Norman-Lott. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Kevin Winston Jr. at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jake Majors at Round 4, Pick 4 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay TreVeyon Henderson at the Round 5 slot for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Connor Colby at the 146th pick, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 192 is the definition of value, full stop. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Jimmy Horn Jr. at the 217th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Anthony Belton in pick No. 220 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A wild overpay on Thor Griffith in No. 241, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
