The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. Rice falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They are betting McCarthy proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a long-term answer under center, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 23rd overall pick they get an island corner. More want than need.
Brenden Rice is a better player than Round 4, Pick 8 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Mohamed Kamara in pick No. 129 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Mason McCormick at slot 157 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Sione Vaki in the 167th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Braiden McGregor at pick 177 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They did well to land Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 7 slot, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A quiet steal in the 232nd overall pick: JD Bertrand for less than the market said. A minor itch, scratched.
