You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Steele Chambers in pick No. 213. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. Landing Allen that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get a bendy edge with upside, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
A tidy little value on Graham Barton in the 56th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Matt Goncalves in pick 87 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid a round early for Cedric Gray in the 125th pick, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Braelon Allen at the Round 5 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A wild overpay on Steele Chambers in pick No. 213, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Mark Perry at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
