The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.
However the rest shakes out, Abrams-Draine at that price is a win they earned. Reaching for McCarthy left real value on the table behind him.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· J.J. McCarthy
· QB
· rank 43
In the 25th pick they get the face of the franchise, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R3.27
· Pick 90
· Gabriel Murphy
· DL-EDGE
· rank 85
A reasonable price with a little left over, Gabriel Murphy in the 90th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.8
· Pick 108
· Khyree Jackson
· CB
· rank 105
Nothing to complain about; Khyree Jackson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.29
· Pick 129
· Cedric Gray
· LB
· rank 135
Cedric Gray in Round 4, Pick 29 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R5.4
· Pick 140
· Kris Abrams-Draine
· CB
· rank 120
The board fumbled Kris Abrams-Draine all the way to pick 140, and they scooped it up. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R5.12
· Pick 148
· Keith Randolph Jr.
· DL-EDGE
· rank 154
They paid sticker price for Keith Randolph Jr. in pick No. 148, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.22
· Pick 158
· Braelon Allen
· RB
· rank 155
Braelon Allen at No. 158 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.24
· Pick 160
· Austin Booker
· DE-EDGE
· rank 159
A straight-up fair deal on Austin Booker at slot 160, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.32
· Pick 168
· LaDarius Henderson
· OT
· rank 163
A tidy little value on LaDarius Henderson in pick 168, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.4
· Pick 179
· Julian Pearl
· OT-EDGE
· rank 185
No edge and no loss on Julian Pearl in Round 6, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
R7.10
· Pick 230
· Jha'Quan Jackson
· WR
· rank 213
Jha'Quan Jackson slipping to the 230th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
