There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Collin Oliver a full 129 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
On value alone, Gordon II makes the weekend a net positive. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Emeka Egbuka in pick 12 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They went early on Alfred Collins in No. 44, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They will replay Jalon Walker at the Round 3 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value said wait; Ty Hamilton in slot 148 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Trevor Etienne in the 168th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Collin Oliver at pick No. 170 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Hayden Conner at the 173rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Jordan Hancock at the Round 6 slot that the board grades a round light. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Steven Parker well ahead of where he belonged. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Ollie Gordon II at Round 7, Pick 32 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
