New England Patriots

More right than wrong for the Patriots, and a B to prove it.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Patriots reached some 70 spots for Seth McLaughlin, and value like that does not grow back.

Landing Gordon II that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The Jakobi Meyers deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Mykel Williams · DE-EDGE · rank 18
In the 14th pick they get a bendy edge with upside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.20 · Pick 20 · Armand Membou · OT · rank 22
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 32
Omarion Hampton at pick No. 38 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 64
Deone Walker in the 68th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Isaiah Bond · WR · rank 76
They took Isaiah Bond at par in No. 69, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.10 · Pick 74 · Darien Porter · CB · rank 75
They paid sticker price for Darien Porter in pick 74, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.17 · Pick 119 · Tez Johnson · WR · rank 100
The board fumbled Tez Johnson all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.5 · Pick 143 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 170
Jack Nelson at Round 5, Pick 5 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.33 · Pick 171 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 241
They reached a country mile for Seth McLaughlin at the 171st pick, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
R6.17 · Pick 193 · Cobee Bryant · CB · rank 175
Cobee Bryant in slot 193 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R6.28 · Pick 204 · Ollie Gordon II · RB · rank 164
Ollie Gordon II in pick No. 204 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Oronde Gadsden II · TE · rank 181
Somehow Oronde Gadsden II was still sitting there in the 217th overall pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
