The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Patriots reached some 70 spots for Seth McLaughlin, and value like that does not grow back.
Landing Gordon II that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Jakobi Meyers deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 14th pick they get a bendy edge with upside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Omarion Hampton at pick No. 38 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Deone Walker in the 68th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Isaiah Bond at par in No. 69, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Darien Porter in pick 74, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board fumbled Tez Johnson all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jack Nelson at Round 5, Pick 5 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Seth McLaughlin at the 171st pick, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Cobee Bryant in slot 193 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Ollie Gordon II in pick No. 204 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Somehow Oronde Gadsden II was still sitting there in the 217th overall pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
