Larceny in pick 219 lands the Patriots a B, Smith and all.

The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Brashard Smith, the No. 108 name on the board, in the Round 7 slot.

The Nelson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Abdul Carter · DE-EDGE · rank 8
In the 5th pick they get juice off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 17
They will replay Nick Emmanwori at the 35th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 19
They robbed the room for Omarion Hampton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 69
By-the-book stuff, Deone Walker at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 118
Jack Nelson at pick No. 72 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
R3.23 · Pick 87 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 83
Barrett Carter in Round 3, Pick 23 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Kevin Winston Jr. · S · rank 92
Nice patience on Kevin Winston Jr., who had no business lasting to slot 105. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.22 · Pick 123 · Jake Majors · C · rank 93
Jake Majors at No. 123 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.2 · Pick 140 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 105
Circle this one: Smael Mondon Jr. at Round 5, Pick 2 is a fall that decides a draft. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R7.5 · Pick 219 · Brashard Smith · RB · rank 108
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Brashard Smith in slot 219, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.8 · Pick 222 · Bryson Nesbit · TE · rank 233
Bryson Nesbit at pick No. 222 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
R7.23 · Pick 237 · Garrett Dellinger · OG · rank 249
Garrett Dellinger at the 237th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
