After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Jayden Daniels is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Harden. Every board in the league had McClellan lower, and that gap is the story.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Brian Thomas Jr. in No. 34. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid a round early for Kingsley Suamataia in the 49th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Christian Mahogany in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Khyree Jackson slid further than he should have, and Round 4, Pick 3 is lovely value for the cornerback. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No edge and no loss on Theo Johnson in pick 115; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid up for Justin Eboigbe at slot 137 when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jase McClellan at the 180th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Steele Chambers in pick 193 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Circle this one: Myles Harden at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
