New England Patriots

Grand theft in the Round 7 slot: the Patriots steal Bassa and grade out a B-.

Future B+

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jeffrey Bassa, the No. 118 name on the board, stolen at pick No. 238. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

Reaching for Trapilo left real value on the table behind him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.28 · Pick 28 · Mike Green · DE-EDGE · rank 34
Mike Green in slot 28 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 16
Nick Emmanwori at Round 2, Pick 2 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 18
Steal is underselling it; Omarion Hampton at the 38th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.1 · Pick 65 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 69
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Deone Walker. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Ozzy Trapilo · OT · rank 130
Ozzy Trapilo at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 81
No edge and no loss on Barrett Carter in pick 77; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R4.3 · Pick 104 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 115
They paid a round early for Jack Nelson in the 104th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Kevin Winston Jr. · S · rank 91
Kevin Winston Jr. in pick No. 143 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.19 · Pick 194 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 210
A conviction pick on Seth McLaughlin at the 194th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Bryson Nesbit · TE · rank 249
Bryson Nesbit in Round 7, Pick 1 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Nick Nash · WR · rank 253
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nick Nash in pick No. 220, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Jeffrey Bassa · LB · rank 118
The board fumbled Jeffrey Bassa all the way to No. 238, and they scooped it up. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
