A masterclass at the trade table lands the Patriots a A-.

If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Patriots, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.

Reaching for Gray left real value on the table behind him. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 15
Will Campbell at pick 11 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 25
A tidy bit of business in the 37th overall pick, where Jalon Walker graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Colston Loveland · TE · rank 46
Colston Loveland in pick No. 38 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Xavier Watts · S · rank 48
Xavier Watts at slot 68 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Denzel Burke · CB · rank 65
A tidy little value on Denzel Burke in the Round 3 slot, a step better than break-even. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Tory Horton · WR · rank 103
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tory Horton. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Nicholas Singleton · RB · rank 102
They did well to land Nicholas Singleton in Round 4, Pick 4, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.11 · Pick 112 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 118
Jack Nelson in No. 112 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.2 · Pick 140 · Joshua Gray · OG · rank 167
A big swing on Joshua Gray at No. 140, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.8 · Pick 222 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 202
Somehow Seth McLaughlin was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.23 · Pick 237 · Luke Lachey · TE · rank 246
The board had cheaper options than Luke Lachey at Round 7, Pick 23, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.34 · Pick 248 · Thor Griffith · DL · rank 267
A real head-scratcher, Thor Griffith in the 248th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.39 · Pick 253 · Garrett Dellinger · OG · rank 249
Garrett Dellinger in pick 253 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
