The phones were a trap the Patriots kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Beebe pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. On value alone, Bullock makes the weekend a net positive.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A real need, handled.
In pick 27 they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
A conviction pick on Cooper Beebe at No. 36 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at the 68th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jaylen Wright at pick No. 71 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Calen Bullock in the Round 4 slot, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Tommy Eichenberg at the 156th pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They did well to land AJ Barner in slot 174, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Julian Pearl in the 193rd overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
