The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 30 spots for Darius Robinson, and value like that does not grow back.
It is not that Hicks is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a long-term starter on the line, reach and all. A real need, handled.
A reach for Edgerrin Cooper in the 41st overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
By-the-book stuff, Javon Bullard at pick No. 57 squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 3 slot on Jaden Hicks with quarterback, tight end and other spots unsolved.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Darius Robinson in the 91st pick, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cam Hart in pick 126 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They did well to land Jaylen Wright in the 168th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Christian Jones at the Round 6 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Fair-plus on De'Corian Clark, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Trevor Keegan in slot 243 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
They jumped the gun on Nathaniel Watson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
