You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Noah Cain at pick 235, roughly 141 spots before his name belonged.

The whole projection now runs through Jayden Daniels; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 6
In the 4th overall pick they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A real need, handled.
R1.26 · Pick 26 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 22
Troy Fautanu at pick 26 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.14 · Pick 46 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 47
They paid sticker price for Cooper Beebe in Round 2, Pick 14, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 67
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 87
A tidy little value on Trey Benson in slot 92, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Elijah Jones · CB · rank 115
Elijah Jones at No. 103 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 125
No drama and no debate, Johnny Wilson went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
They went early on Tommy Eichenberg in the 137th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 206
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jared Wiley in slot 179, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 200
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joe Milton III. The roster fit checks out.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Keaton Bills · OG · rank 240
A reach for Keaton Bills in Round 7, Pick 11; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.15 · Pick 235 · Noah Cain · RB · rank 376
A real head-scratcher, Noah Cain in No. 235 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
