A franchise passer in McCarthy headlines a C+ weekend for the Vikings.

The Vikings did not so much draft Fabien Lovett as overpay for him, 132 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through offensive lineman. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Sinnott.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.

In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 42
In slot 11 they get their guy under center for the next decade, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 58
They jumped the gun on T'Vondre Sweat, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 100
Jacob Cowing in the 109th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 131
MarShawn Lloyd in the 130th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.9 · Pick 145 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 142
They did well to land Malik Mustapha in the Round 5 slot, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 145
Ben Sinnott is a better player than Round 5, Pick 21 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Austin Booker · DE-EDGE · rank 164
They paid sticker price for Austin Booker in slot 166, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Braiden McGregor · DE-EDGE · rank 215
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Braiden McGregor. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.7 · Pick 227 · Fabien Lovett · DL · rank 359
They left a pile of value on the table to take Fabien Lovett this early at the 227th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
