The Vikings did not so much draft Fabien Lovett as overpay for him, 132 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through offensive lineman. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Sinnott.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 11 they get their guy under center for the next decade, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They jumped the gun on T'Vondre Sweat, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
Jacob Cowing in the 109th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
MarShawn Lloyd in the 130th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They did well to land Malik Mustapha in the Round 5 slot, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ben Sinnott is a better player than Round 5, Pick 21 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for Austin Booker in slot 166, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Braiden McGregor. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Fabien Lovett this early at the 227th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
