The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
The Gore Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Fashanu pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
Olumuyiwa Fashanu in the Round 1 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
No drama and no debate, Troy Franklin went about where he belonged in slot 34. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nothing to complain about; Cooper Beebe went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Jermaine Burton at the 90th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Mekhi Wingo in pick No. 103, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A big swing on Elijah Jones at pick 120, well ahead of any board in the building. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Nice patience on Jalyx Hunt, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 1. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tanner McLachlan in pick No. 180, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Frank Gore Jr. at the 231st pick, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
