Somebody in the Round 5 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Barrett Carter, the No. 82 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Every board in the league had Warren lower, and that gap is the story.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 1st pick they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
Tyler Warren in pick 36 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Steal is underselling it; Tyler Booker at slot 67 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Alfred Collins at pick No. 79 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jordan James at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Barrett Carter in the 138th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Seth McLaughlin in Round 7, Pick 3, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Miles Frazier at No. 220 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A conviction pick on Duce Chestnut at the Round 7 slot that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
