There is reaching, and then there is Jay Toia at the Round 6 slot. The Cowboys jumped the board by 139 and dared it to prove them wrong. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Getting Henderson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid a round early for Will Campbell in the 11th pick, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jack Sawyer in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Alfred Collins at pick 73 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached into another round for Donovan Jackson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kyren Lacy in slot 169 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
TreVeyon Henderson at the 170th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Barryn Sorrell. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A real head-scratcher, Jay Toia in the 186th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Ollie Gordon II in the 209th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
