The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Steelers watched Keionte Scott slide 25 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. If Capehart pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. On the needs board they went 6 of 9, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Olaivavega Ioane at the Round 1 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 53 with a little surplus value in A.J. Haulcy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value with a capital V on Zachariah Branch in the 76th overall pick, a genuine coup. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Keionte Scott in Round 3, Pick 21 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They read the board right and Bryce Lance was the payoff at slot 99. The roster fit checks out.
A conviction pick on DeMonte Capehart at the 121st pick that the board grades a round light. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Oscar Delp in No. 135. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Drew Allar at pick 161 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Riley Nowakowski in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy little value on Kaden Wetjen in Round 7, Pick 8, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A premium they did not need to pay, Fa'alili Fa'amoe a notch or two before his time. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Isaiah Nwokobia in pick No. 237. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
