The Jordan Whittington pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 59 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They banked enough surplus on Legette to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on JC Latham. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
In the Round 1 slot they get a wrecking ball inside at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A quiet steal in Round 2, Pick 16: Xavier Legette for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jackson Powers-Johnson in No. 56 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached a country mile for Khyree Jackson at slot 76, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Junior Colson is a better player than the 87th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value said wait; Frank Gore Jr. in slot 114 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
A big swing on LaDarius Henderson at No. 124, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jaylan Ford at the 131st overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Joe Milton III in pick 161; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Gabe Hall at pick No. 174 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jordan Whittington at the 212th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Dwight McGlothern at Round 7, Pick 25 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
