When a board-topper like Ryan Watts slides to the 251st pick, you do not overthink it, and the Packers did not. The bottom line is a respectable B-.

Spending an early pick on safety with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Every board in the league had Powers-Johnson lower, and that gap is the story.

They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Tyler Nubin · S · rank 29
In the 25th pick they get a centerfielder for the defense. Need was not the driver here.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
A reach on Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick No. 41; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 46
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent the Round 2 slot on Calen Bullock, a safety they were not short of.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 84
Marist Liufau in the 88th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 92
Bucky Irving in No. 91 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 122
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kris Abrams-Draine in Round 4, Pick 26. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Jaylin Simpson · CB · rank 154
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaylin Simpson at slot 168. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 213
The board had cheaper options than Jordan Magee at pick 203, and it noticed. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Rasheen Ali · RB · rank 207
They let Rasheen Ali come to them and pounced at pick No. 216. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Brevyn Spann-Ford · TE · rank 239
Brevyn Spann-Ford at pick 243 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · Ryan Watts · CB · rank 229
Ryan Watts at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
