There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for Solomon Byrd, 42 picks ahead of schedule. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
However the rest shakes out, Coleman at that price is a win they earned. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 12 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
The board had cheaper options than J.J. McCarthy at the Round 2 slot, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They robbed the room for Keon Coleman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Zak Zinter in the 103rd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They went early on Roger Rosengarten in pick 137, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had Kamal Hadden higher than Round 6, Pick 5, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A wild overpay on Jaylen Harrell in slot 193, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; Solomon Byrd in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
