There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Cowboys started one anyway for Austin Stogner, 95 picks ahead of schedule. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Getting Gould where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Payton Wilson at the 36th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled Austin Booker all the way to the 87th pick, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A reach for Brandon Coleman in Round 3, Pick 27; a little patience would have been rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Braelon Allen at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
A wild overpay on Trevin Wallace in pick No. 100, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reach on Fabien Lovett in the Round 5 slot; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nice patience on Blake Watson, who had no business lasting to the 216th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Anthony Gould at slot 233 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
