The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
If Duke pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get the arm they will build around, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
Jordan Morgan at slot 34 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jermaine Burton in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Malachi Corley. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Max Melton at the 68th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They liked Christian Mahogany enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 3, Pick 24. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Theo Johnson at the 104th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jordan Travis in No. 136, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
A wild overpay on Trevor Keegan in Round 5, Pick 7, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No edge and no loss on Jase McClellan in the 182nd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value said wait; Eyabi Okie-Anoma in No. 229 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached into another round for Khalid Duke, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
