Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Jaydon Blue at the 249th overall pick is 81 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Mondon Jr.. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a matchup problem out wide, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Good price on Jihaad Campbell in the 44th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Shemar Turner this early at the Round 3 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jack Nelson in pick No. 150 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach for Dont'e Thornton Jr. in slot 170; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A safety of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 33 is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Steal is underselling it; Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 174 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They read the board right and Dorian Strong was the payoff at No. 190. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cam Jackson at the 211th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaydon Blue. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
