After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They will need Harrell to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Melton pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Troy Fautanu slipping to No. 34 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
Xavier Legette in Round 3, Pick 4 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Max Melton at pick 104. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid up for Fabien Lovett at pick No. 136 when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylen Harrell well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jawhar Jordan at the 229th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
