The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
Hunt has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took McCaffrey.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. It is not that Hunt is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A real need, handled.
Adonai Mitchell at pick 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nothing to complain about; Kiran Amegadjie went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A straight-up fair deal on Isaac Guerendo at slot 107, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
A curious use of Round 4, Pick 36. Edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a S-EDGE in Jalyx Hunt did not.
Brandon Coleman in the 156th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy bit of business in No. 179, where Kamal Hadden graded well above the range. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Steal is underselling it; Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 192 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tyler Owens at pick No. 231 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
