The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
They will need Owens to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They banked enough surplus on Jones to cover a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Spending an early pick on S-EDGE with edge rusher, running back and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 37 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at the 68th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Cam Hart at par in the 92nd pick, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A big swing on Fabien Lovett at slot 115, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 36: Jalyx Hunt adds a S-EDGE while edge rusher, running back and other spots keeps waiting.
They reached a country mile for Tyler Owens at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They robbed the room for Elijah Jones here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
