Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
Reaching for Harrell left real value on the table behind him. The Bertrand value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Troy Fautanu in the 34th pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They did well to land Devontez Walker in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value with a capital V on Cam Hart in slot 107, a genuine coup. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The board had cheaper options than Fabien Lovett at the 136th overall pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Luke McCaffrey is a better player than pick No. 182 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jaylen Harrell at Round 6, Pick 9 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
JD Bertrand in pick 229 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It adds depth where they could use a little.
