The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Hunt has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Hunt pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Brian Thomas Jr. at No. 34 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good price on Kiran Amegadjie in slot 68, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Caelen Carson at pick No. 104. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose S-EDGE. Jalyx Hunt in pick 136 leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Luke McCaffrey is a better player than the 182nd overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow Elijah Jones was still sitting there in the 229th pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
