The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
However the rest shakes out, Coleman at that price is a win they earned. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Reaching for Suamataia left real value on the table behind him.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value.
Kingsley Suamataia at the 34th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Keon Coleman at the 68th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Xavier Legette in pick No. 104 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kamal Hadden at No. 145 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid a round early for Elijah Jones in the Round 6 slot, more than the board wanted. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tip Reiman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taking Nathan Thomas in Round 7, Pick 9 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
